When I heard that the Supreme Court of California voted to reduce the enrollment of UC Berkeley, I was disappointed. Why stop there when we could do better? We need to cut enrollment entirely, allow our final classes to graduate, and let nature reclaim our lands.
This epidemic that is Berkeley has been going on for far too long and needs to stop. Think about it for a second. We educate our students… why? Why can’t we just go to UCLA or Stanford instead? Why Berkeley specifically? There are many good institutions out there. I wish I was a farm boy instead of studying EECS. I wish I could ride my horsey down to what is today “Soda Hall” and feed him carrots. Instead, I need to study for this midterm and make sure I get +0.2 SDs above the mean. What kind of life is that?
We need to be honest about what we are doing with our education and our degrees. Too many of us are going to Cabo and Cancun and not many of us are thinking about Climate and Common Courtesy. We dedicate our future to serving other people when we could be dedicating it to ourselves, our pets, and our children. Our planet is dying, and I couldn’t help but feel sorry that my last few years on earth are spent thinking about my GPA.
Instead of the vast amounts of land that the Berkeley campus is currently occupying, we could dedicate a portion of our campus to building desperately needed facilities such as daycares, massage parlors, restaurants, strip malls, and other essential infrastructure. Almost anything is better than our current status quo.
The fact remains that the existence or lack of existence of Berkeley has little to no effect on the world. Take a second to digest that. Let it marinate in your mind. And when it has marinated enough, you will join me in returning Berkeley to its nameless, harmless origin… green hills and towering redwoods.
Thank you and take care,
Daniel
